We traveled to the Kalahari Desert region of South Africa, along its northern borders with Namibia and Botswana, to study meerkat behavior with research teams from Cambridge University in a program sponsored by Earthwatch. We arrived in Cape Town in early April and explored the area for a couple of days, then flew northeast to Upington and drove north from there. We stayed in the Kuruman River Reserve for a couple of weeks to work with the meerkats. Later, we traveled through Johannesburg and then east to the private game reserves near Kruger National Park in the northeast of South Africa near the Mozambique border for a few days of safari.
