French Guiana, Guadeloupe and Dominica, 2015
We drove to French Guiana from Suriname, crossing the Maroni River by boat to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the site of a French penal colony from the 19th century. French Guiana is a department of France so we were technically in the European Union once past passport control. Here the EU launches satellites into space. See our blog post at "Rockets in the Rainforest? ".
Since we were already in "France" we flew to another part of "France" in the Caribbean, the island of Guadeloupe, and stayed a few days for birding and hiking volcanoes. From there we took a short flight to Dominica for more birding, snorkeling and hiking volcanoes. We have another blog post at "Volcanoes of the Caribbean".
