We visited El Salvador in November, 2012 to climb several volcanoes and explore the country. After a quick flight from Miami to San Salvador, we headed west into the mountains along the "Ruta de Las Flores" near Juayua for some mountain biking and hiking through high coffee plantations. We hiked the volcanoes of Cerro Verde National Park (Izalco and Illamatepec) before heading east to El Pital, the highest point in El Salvador at 8957 feet, along the Honduran border. From there we headed back toward San Salvador, stopping at El Boqueron National Park for quick hike. After a couple of nights in San Salvador, we headed northeast to climb Chinchontepec and explored Suchitoto along Lake Suchtitlan. We continued our hiking near Alegria to climb Tecapa and San Miguel. After all that climbing, we headed to the beaches at El Cuco for surf lessons and some rest. We climbed one more volcano overlooking the Gulf of Fonseca, Volcan Conchagua, before heading back home. We posted more details of our El Salvador adventure on our blog at
Greetings from San Salvador.
